KUALA LUMPUR (Thomson Financial) - Malaysian shares ended the morning session sharply higher on Wednesday, tracking strong gains on Wall Street overnight after the Federal Reserve pledged to pump up to 200 billion dollars into ailing financial markets.

Extended bargain-hunting after Monday's free fall also gave a boost to the local bourse.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished 3.6 percent higher at 12,156.81 on Tuesday after the Fed announced the measure as part of a worldwide effort to help struggling banks and mortgage providers.

The Fed, acting with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank, will loan investment banks money in exchange for debt, including slumping mortgage-backed securities.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was up 36.16 points or 3.0 percent at 1,242.70.
